A restriction on the kind of materials that can host
nanoscale magnetic whirlpools known as skyrmions has been lifted by
experimentalists at RIKEN. This will significantly expand the range
of the materials skyrmions can be created in, making them even more
attractive for use in low-power data-storage devices.
